Friday, November 2, 2007 11/02/07: Justin Gaines, 18, Duluth, GA
JUSTIN IS STILL MISSING.
Justin Gaines, a well-liked 18-year-old, attending Gainesville State College went to a nightclub with friends in Duluth, GA on November 2, 2007. He was last seen around 2 a.m. after he was unable to get a ride home.
Timeline From AMW.com: On November 1, 2007, Justin came home from Athens, Ga. around 8 p.m. He then changed his clothes and left for a friend's house around 8:30 p.m. Justin and his friends decided to go out to Wild Bill's, one of Justin's favorite bars in Duluth, GA. It advertised it's 18 & up night as, "18 to party, 21 to drink," but Justin reportedly had two fake ID's--one with the name Brad Allen and the other with the name Brad Shewe.
According to justingaines.com, the surveillance video showed he arrived at exactly 11:38 p.m. Eyewitnesses last saw Justin around 1 a.m. at the bar. Then Justin called his roommate around 2 a.m. for a ride. According to justingaines.com, his roommate was not able to pick him up, and he left the bar sometime between 2 and 2:30 a.m. A parking lot attendant said Justin had found a ride, but he has not been heard from since.
The Search for Justin Justin is normally good about checking in with his family, so by Sunday Justin's mom, Erika Wilson, was worried. She got in touch with his friends and tried local medical facilities but found no trace of her son. Police initially tried to track Justin's cell phone signal and looked over any relevant video surveillance from the night Justin disappeared. Investigators now say they are working leads that may support evidence that Justin met with foul play that night. Justin's family has increased a reward of up to $25,000 for anyone who can provide information on Justin's whereabouts.
Facts of Interest in This Case: Name/Age: Justin Gaines, 18 College: Gainesville State College in Oconee, GA Last Seen: 11/2/07, 2 a.m., Wild Bill's bar (2075 Market St NW), Duluth, GA Physical Description: 5'10, 230 lbs., blue eyes, buzzed brown hair, muscular build. Justin was last seen wearing a long-sleeved gray with "Abercrombie" stamped on the chest and diamond stud earrings in both ears. http://www.myspace.com/gaines54 http://www.justingaines.com According to http://www.operationfindachild.org, Justin's car, wallet and laptop were at his parent's home. His cell phone is no longer in use (battery died).

Men go missing, too: Stigmas breed apathy

Justin Gaines, a student at Gainesville College and State Univeristy, went missing Nov. 2, 2007 from Wild Bill's in Duluth.

WILSON
Justin Gaines wanted to look good for the ladies.
The Gainesville State freshman was home on a Thursday night and sought assurance from his stepfather his shirt looked OK.
A night of fun with friends was the plan, but as often happens, the plan changed.
Gaines and the group headed to Wild Bill’s, a dance club in Duluth. Armed with a pass to get in for free, Gaines was ready to go, but the others were left to pay a cover charge. They chose not to pay, and Gaines went in without them.
No big deal, guys do it all the time.
Toward the end of the night, Gaines called friends for a ride home, but found no takers. Surveillance cameras showed him wandering in and out of the club, the last time around 2 a.m.
It was Nov. 2, 2007.
He has not been heard from since.
“It’s hard to think of what he’d be doing now, but I know he would be excelling at it,” his mother, Erika Wilson said in a phone interview. “He is a good kid and has a great personality.”

On college campuses, most women are constantly warned of the dangers of crime, but men not so much.
Whether through DNA or social norms, men tend to worry less about their own safety. But men are targeted just as much as women, University Police Chief Jimmy Williamson said in a phone interview.
“We all have the same opportunity to be victimized,” he said. “But men and women see crime in a different light.”
Men and women view their risks differently, he said.
“Men are going to look at situations from the perspective that they control things, and women are going to ask more questions,” he said.
The sexes tend to be victims of different kinds of crimes. Men are more likely to be involved in an armed robbery or battery crime, and women are more likely to be victims of sexual assault, Williamson said.
Students should think they can be a victim of a crime, Williamson said, adding they should also control how much they drink. Alcohol is the biggest factor in crimes in Athens and consuming alcohol moderately could dramatically reduce students’ risk to crime, he said.
For men, ordinary actions can lead to terrible consequences. A simple aside can land a man in the hospital. Williamson cautions men against fighting with men they don’t know at bars. Many men think fighting involves saying a few curse words and “maybe throwing a punch,” but “you never know how the other party is socialized,” Williamson said.
There have been cases in Athens where one man used words and another used a knife, he said.
He also said online social networking exposes students to risk. Web sites such as Facebook and Twitter allow individuals to comfortably talk to people they may not know.
Though students should not cut themselves off from the things that increase risk – such as alcohol and online social networking – Williamson said they should act wisely.
“We tell people all their life not to talk to strangers, but all the things we teach as a society to be safe go out the window when people sit down at their computers,” he said.
Williamson also said youth can increase the risk of crime. Statistics from the National Crime Information Center show there are 31,703 missing individuals ages 18 to 21.
“As you become more worldly, you take less risk,” he said.

In the six weeks after Gaines’ disappearance, his mother joined other groups to look for him continuously. Texas EquuSearch, the organization that helped look for missing persons such as Laci Peterson, participated in a five-day hunt for Gaines, and the Georgia Defense Team also helped for a weekend.
They scoured the area around Wild Bill’s for clues, but nothing was found, leading Wilson to believe Gaines left the nightclub in a vehicle.
“In the beginning [the search] wasn’t thorough,” Wilson said. “We had to do another search to make sure we didn’t miss anything.”
Professionals from Texas EquuSearch trained Gaines’ family how to conduct proper searches.
“It was things like submitting all of Justin’s stuff to the NCIC [National Crime Information Center] national database not just the GCIC [Georgia Crime Information Center], because if something horrible happened to him, his remains would be unidentified,” Wilson said.
Gaines’ family was introduced to Bob Poulnot, a private investigator who volunteered to work for them pro bono.
“He is my sanity,” Wilson said. “I know there is someone who cares. He is trying to help us find closure.”
Wilson, who has six other children ranging from a daughter in eighth grade to a 22-year-old son at Ohio State, spends much of her time searching for her seventh child. She maintains a Web site dedicated to Gaines’ disappearance – justingaines.com – and started the Justin Time Foundation. The organization helps families in the early stages of searching for loved ones between the ages of 17 to 25, by forming search parties, providing dogs and thinking of the little things – such as food for searchers.
“It’s my life now,” she said. “I haven’t worked since this happened. My job is to find information and help others.”
She calls attention to all missing people, she said. “College students are especially overlooked,” she said. Her group offers assistance as police departments are not equipped with enough time or resources.
Since Gaines was 18 at the time of his disappearance, and there is no law against being a missing person, police were not required to search for him, Wilson said. Because he went missing in Gwinnett County, police are bogged down dealing with daily crime in a large metropolitan area.
“I think a lot of things slip through the cracks,” Wilson said.
To let college students know they can be victims, Wilson blogs about safety, encouraging young people to travel in groups and always making sure they have a safe ride home.
She continues to search for her son, whose disappearance inspired her to start the foundation. Her mission is to help others – and find her son.
“I’m not going to stop searching and looking for leads,” she said. “I don’t want Justin to be forgotten.”

http://www.gracefellowshipchurch.com/ Missing Gwinnett Teen Was Facing Charges 27th Nov 2007 LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. -- The Gwinnett County teen missing since a night of drinking last month was facing previous alcohol-related charges, WSB-TV Channel 2 Action News has learned.
Family members confirmed that Athens police arrested Justin Gaines, 18, for underage drinking, an open container and possession of a fake ID on June 21.
He was scheduled to make a court appearance last week.
His family dismissed suggestions that the legal problem was behind Gaines' disappearance.
The teen has been missing since a night out November 1 with friends at Wild Bill's nightclub in Duluth.
Several searches and a $50,000 reward have failed to turn up any sign of Gaines.
The Gainesville College student came home the night he disappeared and told his mother he was going out with friends. He was dropped off at Wild Bill's. Later that night, he called a friend to pick him up, but his friend told him that he could not.
Police have said the investigation has slowed due to lack of cooperation from some of Gaines' close friends.
http://www.wsbtv.com/news/14701618/detail.html Gwinnett Teen Arrested Before Disappearance 26th Nov 2007 DULUTH, Ga. -- A Gwinnett teenager who has been missing for more than three weeks was arrested earlier this month in Athens, according to police report obtained exclusively by CBS 46 News.
According to Athens-Clarke County police, Justin Gaines, 18, was arrested June 21, after an officer found an open bottle of vodka in Gaines’ car.
According to the report, the arresting officer found Gaines passed out in his car.
“Have you been drinking?” the officer asked. Gaines said no, according to the report.
After being asked whether he would take a Breathalyzer test, Gaines said “Yes, I’ll do anything,” according to the report.
The report said Gaines blew a .11 blood alcohol level, well above the state limit of .08 percent. Gaines was charged with second-degree forgery for a fake ID, possession of alcohol by a minor and open container.
Gaines had a court hearing scheduled for Nov. 16, but failed to show up.
Gaines disappeared on Nov. 2. He was last seen at Wild Bill's nightclub in Duluth.
CBS 46 talked with Gaines’ stepfather, Steven Wilson, Monday. He said he was not aware of the charges before Gaines disappeared.
But Wilson said he does not believe Gaines’ disappearance is related to the charges.
http://www.cbs46.com/news/14697360/detail.html Soldiers Search For Missing Teen 24th Nov 2007 Members of the Georgia State Defense Force poured over a map Saturday morning before dividing their soldiers into search teams.
Their mission--to try to find clues to the whereabouts of Justin Gaines, 18, a college student from Gwinnett County who's been missing for three weeks.
"I'm happy to see all these people and overwhelmed by the numbers that showed," said Justin's stepfather Steve Wilson.
At sunrise, 135 soldiers with the Georgia State Defense Force gathered at Berkmar United Methodist Church, which served as the search staging area.
The soldiers are part of an unpaid, volunteer force, and they have the training and experience needed to cover a lot of ground.
"Their hearts are bigger than their minds," said Capt. Hayden Collins. "They will go out of their way to give of themselves every chance you give them. They're here to give of themselves today."
Justin was last seen at Wild Bill's nightclub on November 1.
Gwinnett county police said they have no evidence of foul play, but they've expressed frustration that some of his friends have not cooperated with their investigation.
Justin's family is also frustrated.
"They're supposed to be close friends, so why wouldn't they come forward to take a couple of hours and go to the police station to give a statement," said Wilson. "Doesn't make sense to me."
Justin is a student at the Athens campus of Gainesville State College.
A $50,000 reward is being offered for his safe return.
GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. (FOX 5) – The search for Gwinnett County teenager Justin Gaines continued Saturday and there was new hope that someone would find a trace of the missing student.
Extra manpower and extra help were called in for the 18-year-old Gaines.
"They've all had wilderness search and rescue training and they're good at it," said
More than 120 members of the Georgia Defense Force fanned out across Gwinnett County and a private investigator who has worked on the Natalee Holloway case also joined in the effort.
"We plan for a full-scale investigation and with my presence to assist in that investigation and to keep this case active and live," said private investigator TJ Ward.
Gaines has been missing for 23 days and he was last seen November 1 at the Wild Bill's nightclub in Gwinnett County.
"I just want to find my son. I have to make my family whole again," said Gaines' mother Erika Wilson.
Investigators said there has been no sign of a crime, but Gaines' family thinks someone knows something about the teen's disappearance.
http://www.myfoxatlanta.com/myfox/pages/....Y&pageId= 3.2.1 Missing Teen 24th Nov 2007 LILBURN, Ga -- More than 100 citizen soldiers Saturday joined in the search for a missing Gwinnett County teenager. Justin Gaines hasn't been since since November 1st when he and friends went to Wild Bill's nightclub in Lawrenceville.
For the rest of the month, family and friends searched virtually round-the-clock for Justin, but, so far, without any luck. They've put up a billboard and offered a hefty cash reward for information about his whereabouts, but, still, no Justin.
Saturday, searchers got a boost from the volunteers of the Georgia State Defense Force. The citizen soldiers, who are not armed, but are trained in search-and-rescue operations fanned out from a chuch in Lilburn to look for the missing teen. The search continued til dark, but, unfortunately, netted little new information about the mysterious disappearance of Justin Gaines.
Family members thanked the community for its help in the search, and vowed to keep searching until they find out what happened to Justin.

Quote: NORTH RIDGEVILLE — A North Ridgeville man has endured many sleepless nights since learning his son has not been seen or heard from for more than a week after partying with friends at a bar in Georgia. Gaines
Richard Gaines of Wallace Boulevard said his 18-year-old son, Justin Gaines, has been missing since 1 a.m. Nov. 1, when he was last seen at a bar called Wild Bills. Police have said there are no witnesses of how Justin Gaines left the bar.
Gwinnett County police Cpl. Illana Spellman said there have been reports that Justin Gaines got into an altercation with another patron at the bar. However, details remain sketchy about the altercation because the two friends who were with Justin Gaines that night have refused to cooperate with police requests, Spellman said.
Aside from a cell phone call logged at 1:33 a.m. when Gaines said his son called friends in hopes of getting a ride back to his mother’s home in Snellville, Ga., the Gainesville State College student has vanished without a trace.
“I’m out of my mind,” Gaines said Monday. “There’s no normalcy. Once that happens, everything that was going on just goes out the window. It just turns your life upside down.”
Police are investigating Justin Gaines’ disappearance as a missing person’s case as there has been no evidence of foul play, Spellman said. Media outlets in Georgia are reporting that Equasearch of Texas is joining the search for Justin Gaines.
The muscular, blue-eyed college student has lived in Georgia with his mother, Erika Wilson, stepfather and siblings since moving there more than 10 years ago, his father said. Still, the two have remained close, speaking often and chatting online. Gaines said the last time he talked to his son the conversation was about an upcoming visit home for Christmas. Justin Gaines has extensive family in the Lorain County area.
However, on Nov. 4 all those plans changed as Gaines said he received a phone call telling him his oldest child was missing. Since then, Gaines has logged many hours making phone calls, passing out fliers, trading e-mails and even traveling to Georgia to canvass the area around the bar. But, nothing has turned up to tell him what happened to his son.
“The hardest part is the not knowing,” Gaines said. “Nothing makes sense because he wouldn’t just walk away from everything. He’s got a lot going on in his life.”

Additional information on Justin from truecrimeweblog.com 6th Nov 2007 Missing in Georgia: Justin Gaines
Justin Gaines, an 18-year-old college student from the North Atlanta suburbs, has been missing for 5 days.
The muscular, blue-eyed college freshman came home from school in Athens last Thursday, November 1, and decided to go out to one of his favorite bars, Wild Bill's.
When Justin called a friend to come pick him up later in the night, the friend couldn't oblige.
By Sunday, Justin's mom, Erika Wilson, was worried. She got in touch with his friends and tried local medical facilities but found no trace of her son.
Police are now trying to track Justin's cell phone signal and look over any relevant video surveillance from the night Justin disappeared.
Justin Gaines had several online profiles, even a blog.
His MySpace, http://www.myspace.com/gaines54, is locked. The profile photo shows a well-built young man with short brown hair smiling for the camera.
When he was still playing fullback for the Brookwood High School Broncos, Justin created a Geocities website, where he listed some of his favorite hangouts and a few of his likes and dislikes. He wrote at the top of the page:
Hey. I'm Justin. I like to meet girls, hang with friends, play football, party, listen to music, watch movies, go to the beach, run, and go on my boat. I love to have fun and I'm up for trying anything.
Until 2005 Justin kept a Xanga: http://www.xanga.com/Gaines54. He wrote about typical high school stuff in the journal, including a beach trip with a friend and other visits to Wild Bill's:
Me and Kevin went to New Smyrna Beach. Chilled and it was awsome One night went to Club Paris and went to some Disney world Water Park and Unerversals and Island Of Adventure. Over all it was pretty pimp. When me and Kevin were at the beach we also got our ear pierced cause we were bored it pretty cool i guess...
[. . .]
We got back and i just been chillen and Hanging out with my baby and stuff. went to wild bills like a week ago with her. yesturday she came over and today Im going over to her house. She just the greatest gal ever.On Sunday me and a bunch of my boys are all going up to Six Flags. On monday school starts up it gunna suck. Im gunna miss the summer but i guess it will be alright.
Justin reportedly has two fake IDs. The names: Brad Shewe and Brad Allen. He has diamond studs in both ears and the last time he was seen, Justin was wearing a long-sleeved gray with "Abercrombie" stamped on the chest. He attends Gainesville State College in Oconee, GA and is normally good about checking in with his family.
It is hard to believe that someone in Justin's circle of friends doesn't know where he is. He'd obviously been hanging out at Wild Bill's for years. Though it's a big place, a frequent visitor like Justin may have had friends on the staff and plenty of other friends and acquaintances who would typically show up any given weeknight, just as he seemed to do.
Missing men simply don't receive the same news coverage as missing women. This may be because there is a (often mistaken) impression that men somehow bring about their own circumstances when they vanish -- that, or they meant to disappear and don't want to be found. Justin's youth and the known circumstances of his disappearance don't match well with an intentional disappearance.
Did Justin find a ride after all on November 1, 2007? The wrong ride?
If you think you've seen Justin Gaines or know where he is, you should call the Gwinnett County PD at (770) 513-5300. Gwinnett Family: Help Us Find Our Son 7th Nov 2007 POSTED: 8:28 am EST November 7, 2007 LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. -- A Gwinnett County family is asking for the public’s help to find their missing son.
Justin Gaines, 18, has been missing since Nov. 1, said his mother, Erika Wilson.
In a police report Wilson filed Sunday, she said Gaines came home from Athens, Ga., Thursday night and told her he was going out with friends to a bar.
According to the report, Gaines called a friend and asked him to pick Gaines up. But the friend told Gaines he couldn’t do it. Wilson said no one knows where Gaines went, and the family has not heard from Gaines since.
According to the police report, Gaines’ friends said he had false identification on him in the names of Brad Allen and Brad Shewe.
Gaines is 5 feet 11 inches and 210 pounds with a muscular build. He has blue eyes, brown hair, and a buzz cut.

Student Missing After Going To Gwinnett Club 6th Nov 2007 GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. -- A college student has been reported missing when he did not come home after going out to Wild Bill's in Gwinnett County.
Officials said they have started an investigation into the case of an 18-year-old missing since Thursday night. Gwinnett County authorities said Justin Gaines' mother filed a police report Sunday after he didn't return home.
According to the police report, Gaine's mother, Erika Wilson, said that her son came home Thursday and told her he was going out with friends. He was dropped off at Wild Bill's that night. Later that evening, Gaines called a friend to pick him up but the friend told him he couldn't. Gaines has not been seen or heard from since.
"Very frightening. We have seven kids and this is our worst nightmare," said Wilson.
Wilson said she has contacted her son's friends, local hospitals and jails and has not been able to locate her child.
"The community's been great but we haven't had any leads for his whereabouts, what could have happened, if he left with someone and he hasn't called anyone and that's not like him," said Wilson. Gaines is a student at Gainesville State College and his family said he is responsible and usually calls home.
Friends of Gaines said he had fake IDs in the name of Brad Allen and Brad Shewe. He is 5'11" and 210 lbs with a muscular build. He has blue eyes and brown hair with a short buzz cut. He has both his ears pierced with diamond studs and was last seen wearing a long sleeve gray shirt with "Abercrombie" written on the front.

Night Out Ends With Disappearance missing persons,Justin Gaines | Justin s family doesn t know what s happened but they are doing everything they can to find Justin Justin Gaines overview
Justin's family doesn't know what's happened, but they are doing everything they can to find Justin.
Friends say Justin Gaines is a well-liked 18-year-old. His family loves him very much, and they are now doing all they can do to find him. Their search began November 2, 2007, after Justin vanished without a trace.
On November 1, 2007, Justin came home from Athens, Ga. around 8 p.m. He then changed his clothes and left for a friend's house around 8:30 p.m. Justin and his friends decided to go out to Wild Bill's, one of Justin's favorite bars in Duluth, Ga. Eyewitnesses last saw Justin around 1 a.m. at the bar. Then Justin called his roommate around 2 a.m. for a ride, but his roommate was unavailable. This was the last time anyone heard from Justin.
What seemed like a normal night out with friends turned into a nightmare for Justin's family -- a nightmare that will continue until they find him. His friends say Justin has two ID's other than his own, one with the name Brad Allen and the other with the name Brad Shewe. Justin is about 5'10", 210 lbs., and has a muscular build. Both his ears are pierced with diamond stud earrings.
Investigators now say they are working leads that may support evidence that Justin met with foul play that night. Justin's family has increased a reward of up to $25,000 for anyone who can provide information on Justin's whereabouts.
